Chasing Zebras

No, I am not talking about a trip to the zoo or an African safari but a new book about  my favorite TV show House, MD. It stars Hugh Laurie as an obnoxious, but brilliant diagnostician.  If you have loved the show from the begining or are a new watcher you should check out this book!!

Title:  Chasing Zebras: The Unofficial Guide to House, M.D.
Author: Barbara Barnett
Publisher:  Ecw Press
Published:  September 1, 2010
ISBN:  978-1550229554

Summary:
"I look for zebras because other doctors have ruled out all the horses." — Dr. Gregory House
Medical students are taught that when they hear hoofbeats, they should think horses, not zebras, but Dr. House's unique talent of diagnosing unusual illnesses has made House, M.D. one of the most popular and fascinating series on television. In Chasing Zebras: The Unofficial Guide to House, M.D., Barbara Barnett, widely considered a leading House expert, takes fans deep into the heart of the show's central character and his world, examining the way this medical Sherlock Holmes's colleagues and patients reflect him and each other; how the music, settings, and even the humor enhance our understanding of the series' narrative; what the show says about modern medicine, ethics, and religion; and much more. Complete with an episode-by-episode guide and numerous interviews with cast members, producers, and writers, Chasing Zebras is an intelligent look at one of television's most popular shows"

 This is a great look at a super popular show.  I have been watching since the middle of the first season and I was still surprised by some the things that Barnett pointed out about themes and character relationships in this book.  She pointed out lots of ideas that make sense but that are rather subtle so I hadn't picked up on them.  Such as multiple references to Sherlock Holmes the great detective and House the great medical detective.

The beginning of the book is about how the show started,how it became so wildly popular and more info about  the "formula" that makes House the great show that it is.  Then it goes into the characters in the show and the complex working/ personal relationship they are all involved in.   The rest of the book is a break down of every episode in Seasons 1-6.  {The show is currently in the middle of Season 7}

Love the detail from every episode.  If you missed one of want a more in depth analysis of the underlying plot this is the place to go!!  While I have seen all but 1 or 2 episodes from Season 6, I loved reading what she thought when she watched the show and having the little extra background info such as writer/director/actor interviews about certain episodes and topics from the show.

Like I said this is a great book for seasoned fans who want to re-live past episodes and get a more in depth look into their favorite show and also for new fans who may need a little background info to get up to speed on this great show.

This is an intelligent, well written book about an equally intelligent, well written show!!  Must read!!
